Beer, wine & beverage distributors
The wholesalers who supply licensed premises — and the reason you mostly do not get to choose between them.
This category works differently from every other one on this site, and the difference surprises people. Ohio runs a three-tier system with franchise territories: a manufacturer grants a wholesaler an exclusive sales area for its brands, and a retail permit holder may not buy a brand from a wholesaler whose territory does not cover the retail premises. In practice that means your address and the brands you want determine your distributor — you are not shopping between them on price. What you can do is build the relationship, understand the route, and know who to call when a keg blows on a Friday.
What to ask before you commit
Take this into the call. No vendor gets to edit this list.
- Which of the brands I want do you actually carry in my territory? Start from the brand list, not from the distributor.
- What day is my route, what is the order cutoff, and what is the minimum drop?
- What happens if I run out mid-weekend — is there any emergency or will-call option, or am I waiting for the route?
- Do you provide, install, and service draft equipment, and who is responsible for line cleaning and at what interval? Ohio requires beer lines cleaned not less than every fourteen days and requires you — not the distributor — to keep the signed record card. See draft systems and beer line cleaning for who does that work.
- What are the terms, and how does Ohio law constrain what credit you can extend me?
- Will you support a tap takeover, staff education, or a launch event — and what does that ask of me?
- Who is my rep, and who covers when they are out?

Beer lines and bar glassware — the rules that come from Liquor Control, not the health department
Ohio requires beer lines cleaned every fourteen days, a signed record card kept on the premises for two years, and bar glassware sanitized at 150 ppm chlorine. None of it is enforced by your health district.
