1. What does membership cost, and is it flat or scaled to my size?
2. What are the eligibility requirements — independently owned, number of locations, geography?
3. What promotional programs do members participate in, and what does participation require of me?
4. Are there group purchasing or insurance programs, and what do they realistically save?
5. How often does the group meet, and is there an active peer network between meetings?
6. Does the organization do advocacy at city or state level, and on what issues?

  Association of independently owned Cleveland-area restaurants running collective promotion, including Restaurant Week, plus shared marketing and a peer network of local operators.

  For independently owned restaurants specifically. Ask what membership costs, what promotional participation requires of your kitchen during peak weeks, and what the gift certificate program means for your accounting.

• Hospitality Institute of Ohio

  Also listed under Hiring & workforce programs

  Nonprofit workforce arm connected to the Ohio Restaurant & Hospitality Alliance, working to build and train Ohio's hospitality workforce. Runs ProStart career and leadership training, workforce placement initiatives, a career and technical student organization, and the Hospitality Reserve employee assistance fund.

  The industry's national trade association. Operates ServSafe food safety certification, publishes industry research and economic indicators, and runs federal advocacy. Works through state affiliates — in Ohio that is the Ohio Restaurant & Hospitality Alliance.

  For most Northeast Ohio operators the practical entry point is the Ohio affiliate rather than national membership. Worth joining nationally mainly for ServSafe, the research, or a specific member discount program — price those against what you would actually use.

• Ohio Restaurant & Hospitality Alliance

  Ohio's state restaurant and hospitality trade association, founded 1920 and affiliated with the National Restaurant Association. Legislative advocacy, food and alcohol safety training and certification, a member marketplace with negotiated pricing, and industry events.
